Old Standard Quarry

The Jefferson County Planning Commission unanimously rejected the application for a rezoning of the Old Standard Quarry near Harpers Ferry to allow for commercial development of the site (Observer, June 2007). The planning commission said that the proposal is not compatible with the county’s comprehensive plan. The proposal now goes to the county commissioners for their views on the matter.
The Old Standard LLC project site is south of U.S. Route 340. The developer’s plans call for a 60,000-square-foot signature office building, a 150-room hotel with a 22,500-square-foot conference center, and additional office buildings along the property’s lake and the Shenandoah River. Twenty acres of the site would be dedicated as parkland, which could be used for hiking and biking trails, as well as public fishing areas.

Re-Zoning Jefferson

On 8th June, an update of the proposed draft planning and zoning ordinance was placed on the Jefferson County website (Observer, May 2007). The new draft includes the first official map with new planning zones in the county. These documents can be viewed at jeffersoncountywv.org.
Jefferson County Commission appointed a new long-range planner, Tony Redman. One of the major objectives of this position will be to assist in the transition to the new planning and zoning ordinance. The county commission has asked Redman to be the new planning director for the County.

Annexation Request

At a June meeting Shepherdstown’s zoning officer, John Matthews, presented a request for the Jefferson County Commission to approve a 19-acre annexation to Shepherdstown (Observer, April 2007). The motion was proposed by Commissioners Manuel and Surkamp. The motion was passed by the commission.
